Character Info
◎ Character's Name: Pidge Gunderson (or spoilers)
◎ Character's Canon: Voltron Legendary Defender
◎ Character's Age: Unstated; presumed to be in the 13-15 range, skewing lower
◎ Canon Point: The end of season one.
◎ Background/History: Wikia knows it all.
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Hacker here! Child prodigy-variety, capable of building devices on par with Earth military tech and reverse-engineering advanced alien technology in relatively short periods of time.
◎ Personality:
After multiple infractions of trespassing on military property to hack through their files and learn more about the Kerberos mission, on which her father and older brother went missing, Katie Holt was banned from the Galaxy Garrison. With threats of arrest hanging over her head, she did the only sensible thing a girl could do: fabricate the identity "Pidge Gunderson," give herself a haircut and some glasses, and enroll in the Garrison to uncover the conspiracy from within.
In the year that passes in the academy, she proves to be a tech-wizard, building a device on par with or exceeding the technology found there. She uses it to pick up alien radio chatter and learn the word "Voltron," although its meaning remains unclear until the series kicks off. Even alien technology poses no barrier when faced with her determination and intelligence.
At her core, Pidge is about family above all else. She will do anything to find those she lost and everything to keep those she wants to protect. She's single-minded and driven, even obsessed, with learning the truth. But she's still a teenager, prone to comedic arguments about laser noises and fits of childish excitement, naming a small drone "Rover" once she reprograms it for the good guys. When finding her Lion, she's consumed by a sense of wonder at all a new planet has to offer.
Nevertheless, she strongly protests the label of "child," aggressively stating her competency as a Paladin of Voltron and refusing to be underestimated -- whether she's talking to an instructor at the Garrison or a soldier aiming for her life.
Inquisitive and always tinkering behind the scenes, she makes modifications to her own lion as well as other machines simply because she can or she needs to, which often comes in handy.
Having been betrayed by the Galaxy Garrison's lies about the whereabouts of her family, Pidge has become a very guarded person. She won't sneak out at night for Lance's hairbrained schemes, hates that Hunk roots around in her things, and does not want anyone in her head-hole during Allura's "bonding exercises." There are things she is willing to talk about -- sweating and disliking peanuts! -- and can be honest if confronted, but she definitely prefers to keep her plans to herself. While never outright paranoid, "suspicious" is probably a generous starting point.
Not necessarily introverted or bad at conversation per se, Pidge is also initially awkward when it comes to social encounters. Just give her a situation where she can talk about machines (for example, her friendship with Hunk seems to be built on some serious nerd solidarity), or give her time to warm up to the people in question. She leans a little more towards deadpan/sarcastic than overtly comedic, responding to friendly teasing with a friendly temper (although again, she learns to cool off as she grows closer to the team). She talks without thinking and can be abrasive or rude at times, but is generally apologetic if she recognizes her mistakes.
Initially, she is part of Team Voltron because it will help further her goals. But when the castle is threatened and lives are in danger, the innate goodness of a destined hero takes over. She is able to reconcile her desire to see her biological family with the fact that her teammates are also family, and that fighting for the greater good will save more people from suffering the same fate.
More specifically, she recognizes she wasn't always there for Lance and Hunk back at school, apologizes, and makes a notable effort to change that.
Shiro, being the only survivor of the Kerberos mission, is initially an unpleasant reminder of those she's lost, but when she finds out how he saved her brother's life, she's grateful. He's more like an older brother figure himself, calling her by her real name once and quoting her father to keep her spirits up.
Even after she comes clean to the team about her true self and her past, which she does with the same bluntness as any other matter, she continues to use her alias. She does still need to remain undercover, after all.
◎ Powers/Abilities:
- Pilot of the Green Lion. No formal (craft/vehicle) pilot training, although she says she's read the manual.
- Above-average intelligence, with a focus on hacking.
- Combat skills befitting someone who studied in a military academy, but can be constrained by size, accessibility of weapons, etc.
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
(1) Pilot suit -- alternate outfit, no special features.
(2) Bayard -- small weapon not entirely unlike a taser.
(3) Pint-sized Green Lion
(4) Picture of Pidge and her brother because everyone loves a good suffering
(5) Casual outfit
(6) Personal laptop with as little or as much information as allowed on it
(7) the lion probably takes up an extra slot anyway? :x
CEREALIA-Specific
◎ Element: Pidge's image color is green and Earth explicitly fits her Lion's motif.
◎ Sense: Touch immediately comes to mind for a hands-on manipulator of technology.
◎ Seven Character Traits: (Inquisitive, Daring, Intelligent) + (Suspicious, Secretive, Quick-Tempered) | Motivated
Samples
◎ First-Person Sample: TDM toplevel + some other threads
◎ Third-Person Sample:
On this particular morning, Pidge wakes up at her desk with a thin trail of drool connecting her to her CereVice. It's not the first time she's collapsed at the computer or while doing work, ignoring the rising sun in favor of probing her sources for just a little more information.
"Gross," she mumbles, wiping the device clean with her sleeve.
She'd played with the HoloGM to make her room look like a variety of things: her room at the garrison, her room in the castle, the interior of the Green Lion. She still can't bring herself to make it look like her room back home.
There's suddenly a physical weight on her shoulders, and the feel of cold metal against her neck. The Green Lion grumbles, urging her through their bond to consider using her bed instead of that awful desk chair. There would be time later to check on everyone else; her first priority should be taking care of herself.
Pidge gives it an affectionate pat on the head. "I'm glad you're here, too. But I can't afford to rest."
Not while the other Paladins were counting on her. Not when Allura needed her. Not when there was so much to learn about another alien race invading the galaxy, apparently more powerful than even Zarkon and the Galra empire.
The best thing about mechanical lions, Pidge finds herself thinking, is that they don't need litterboxes. It hops off her shoulder and onto the desk, then deliberately sits on the CereVice. They have a staring contest for only a moment. That's all it takes for thoughts and feelings to pass from girl to Lion and become a shared consciousness.
(If it fits, it sits -- or if not, it sits anyway, pay attention to it. How does it feel to be resized like that? Where are the other lions? It's actually pretty cute at that size. It's bored. She's forced to concur. If she won't sleep, can't it at least get to be big again, just for a little while?)
"Fine," Pidge says, stretching out and yawning. "ViVid will let you return to your original size, right? Do you think they'll let us pick the level this time? I don't think you'd fit in a murder mystery. Or a house. It's not like the Castle, there's no hangar."
She can't say she wants to screw around and have fun -- she doesn't, not when the world has supposedly been destroyed -- but in the interest of exploration... Maybe the two of them can make an exception.
